You will see three kinds of computers in offices: desktops, laptops and tablets. They all do similar work, but each suits a different situation. Knowing the difference helps you feel at home anywhere.
The three types
- Desktop โ separate monitor, keyboard and mouse. It stays on one table. Strong and cheaper for the work it does.
- Laptop โ everything joined into one folding unit. You can carry it to meetings or home.
- Tablet โ a flat touch screen with no keyboard. You tap with your finger. Light and easy to carry.
When offices use each
- Desktop โ for staff who sit at one desk all day, like accounts or data entry.
- Laptop โ for people who move around, attend meetings, or work from home sometimes.
- Tablet โ for quick tasks like showing a presentation, reading, or signing on screen.
Common ports (the slots you plug things into)
- USB โ for pen drives, mouse, keyboard and charging cables.
- HDMI โ to connect a bigger screen or a projector.
- Charger port โ where you plug in the power cable to charge a laptop.
A USB slot is a small rectangle. Look on the sides of a laptop โ that is where most ports are.
