Meet Windows: Your Operating System
What an operating system is, how Windows runs everything, and a tour of the desktop.
Every computer needs a helper program that runs everything. On most office computers, that helper is called Windows. Let us meet it โ it will be your daily home for office work.
What is an operating system?
An operating system (OS) is the main software that controls the whole computer. It lets you open apps, save files, connect to Wi-Fi and print. Without it, the computer is just an empty box. Windows is the most common operating system in Indian offices.
Think of Windows like the manager of a shop. It does not sell anything itself, but it tells every worker (app) what to do and keeps everything in order.
A quick tour of the desktop
- Desktop โ the main screen you see after logging in. Your starting point.
- Icons โ small pictures on the desktop that open apps or files when you double-click them.
- Taskbar โ the bar at the bottom of the screen.
- Start button โ the Windows logo at the bottom-left. It opens the Start menu.
